U.S. Department of Energy - Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Planning, Budget, and Analysis

Data Books

The Office of Planning, Budget, and Analysis (PBA) supports the collection and presentation, in a user-friendly manner, of substantial amounts of economic and market data pertinent to the office's technologies and R&D programs. PBA collects data and makes it available in the form of data books, which provide a comprehensive look at various technology areas (electric sector, buildings, transportation, etc.) and improve the consistency and efficiency of EERE analysis.

Most of this data does not actually originate within EERE - it is originally collected or generated by the Energy Information Administration, the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce industry surveys, the International Energy Agency, and private-sector and university researchers. To be most useful to energy policy-makers and analysts, EERE contracts with national laboratories and universities to pull information from those diverse sources into coherent contexts, such as the data books.

EERE has helped develop and maintain the following data books:

  • Biomass Energy Data Book
Compiles biomass data from diverse sources to produce a comprehensive document that supports anyone with an interest or stake in the biomass industry. It focuses on biomass conversion technologies and commercially utilized biomass resources. Learn more

  • Buildings Energy Data Book
Includes statistics on residential and commercial building energy consumption. Data tables contain statistics related to construction, building technologies, energy consumption, and building characteristics. Learn more

  • Hydrogen Data Book
Contains a wide range of factual information on hydrogen and fuel cells. It also provides other data that might be useful in analyses of hydrogen infrastructure in the United States. Learn more

  • Power Technologies Energy Data Book
Contains a wide selection of data and statistics on renewable energy power technologies from a variety of sources-collected in one convenient document. Learn more

  • Transportation Energy Data Book
Represents an assembly and display of statistics and information that characterize transportation activity, and presents data on other factors that influence transportation energy use. Learn more
