Demonstration and Deployment Strategy Workshop

The Department of Energy's (DOE's) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) hosted the Demonstration and Deployment Strategy Workshop on March 12-13, 2014, at Argonne National Laboratory's conference center outside of Chicago, Illinois.

As the bioenergy industry advances commercial scale cellulosic ethanol production, BETO identified  the next step(s) in drop-in hydrocarbon biofuel production. This workshop intended to discuss, reassess, and prioritize the demonstration and deployment efforts needed to realize affordable, scalable, and sustainable production of hydrocarbon biofuels.

University, national laboratory, industry, advocacy, government and other stakeholders considered the following questions:

  • What is the state of technology regarding the deployment of hydrocarbon biofuels, as well as supportive bioproducts and biopower?
  • What are the biggest technical, feedstocks logistics, or other barriers to successful scale-up of these technologies?
  • What are priority strategies for overcoming such technical barriers?

The outcomes of these discussions were expected to result in the following:

  • Determine how BETO can accelerate industry efforts
  • Develop strategy and future plans
  • Lead to a breakout session at the Biomass 2014 conference on July 29-30
