Webinar on Ionic Liquids
May 24, 2013
The Bioenergy Technologies Office will present a live webcast titled "Ionic Liquid Pretreatment Technologies" on Monday, June 24, 2013, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. ET. During the webinar, Dr. Blake Simmons—of Sandia National Laboratories—will present on the discovery, design, and optimization of an ionic liquid pretreatment technology that can efficiently process hardwoods, softwoods, agricultural residues, and other energy crops.
Using ionic liquids in pretreatment techniques generates a product that can be more efficiently converted into a sugar than traditional techniques, such as hot water or dilute acid processes. The resulting sugar can then be used in biological conversion processes to create biofuels or other bioproducts. Dr. Simmons will discuss the latest developments in this approach, as well as highlight additional research on enzymes and microbes that are compatible with ionic liquid technologies, to provide the scientific and economic basis for a scalable, integrated biomass conversion process using this approach.
2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.: Presentation by Dr. Blake Simmons
