April 2013 Blast Recap

Below are some highlights from the April 2013 News Blast.

BETO Hosting Project Peer Review
The Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) is hosting its bienniel Project Peer Review in May. Held on May 20–23, the Peer Review provides an opportunity to learn about new shifts in BETO's focus; interact with stakeholders and BETO staff; and learn more about cutting-edge technical research through hundreds of presentations. The Project Peer Review is open to the public and is free of charge. For more information, visit the Peer Review Portal.

Bioenergy Benefits Across the Supply Chain
BETO celebrated Earth Day in April by showing the positive impact of the bioenergy industry on our planet. A special infographic was designed to show the greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain for both biofuels (created from corn stover) and traditional petroleum. In addition to reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions, the bioenergy industry contributed more than $43 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product in 2012. The industry also supported more than 87,000 direct jobs and more than 86,000 indirect jobs. View the Bioenergy Technologies Office Blog for more on the infographic, and visit the Sustainability Web page to learn more about BETO's sustainability efforts.

National Labs Release New Biochemical Biorefinery Sizing Study

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory released a joint study on biochemical biorefinery sizing. The study was released in April in Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, and examines issues around biorefinery capacity, life-cycle assessment, sustainability, and reliable feedstock logistics. Please read the full paper for more information.

In the Spotlight: Brian Duff
Brian Duff, the BETO Program Manager for Demonstration and Deployment, is in the spotlight this month as part of BETO's video series featuring Office staff. Watch Episode 6 of the Office's Staff Spotlight series to hear Brian the integrated biorefinery subprogram.

BioBlogs
In April, the Bioenergy Technologies Office Blog featured a post on Argonne National Laboratory's Institute for Atom-Efficient Chemical Transformations' (IACT) revolutionary research and development work on catalytic conversion processes. Their primary efforts now focus on the challenge of stabilizing catalysts so they can withstand long-term use. The Institute's solution is a metal overcoating process, which protects the catalysts, enabling cost-efficient chemical conversion. As IACT transitions into applied testing on true biomass products, the Institute will facilitate knowledge transfer to commercialized instury in years to come. Read the full post to learn more.
