Program Areas

The Biomass Program conducts ongoing research and development in the four key areas of Technology required to produce biomass feedstocks and convert them to useful biofuels and value-added products. These Technology areas are: Feedstock Production, Processing and Conversion, Integrated Biorefineries, and Infrastructure. In collaboration with Industry and other Federal Agencies, the Program is also developing a streamlined approach to the Demonstration and Deployment areas of Integrated Biorefineries and Infrastructure.

Biomass program elements begin with R&D, including feedstock production and infrastructure as well as conversion technology. Next is demonstration, which includes integrated biorefineries and infrastructure. Then comes market entry, followed by market penetration, and finally market maturity.
