Rulemaking for Residential Dehumidifiers Energy Conservation Standards

The Department of Energy (DOE) is considering whether to amend its energy conservation standards for residential dehumidifiers. This activity is mandated by the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA).

Recent Updates

DOE has issued a pre-publication Federal Register notice of proposed rulemaking regarding proposed energy efficiency standards for dehumidifiers. (May 14, 2015). DOE will host public meeting scheduled for July 7, 2015.

DOE published a notice of public meeting and availability of the preliminary technical support document regarding energy conservation standards for dehumidifiers. 79 FR 29380 (May 22, 2014).


Public Meeting Information

DOE will host a public meeting Tuesday, July 7, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at at the U.S. Department of Energy, Forrestal Building, Room 8E-089, 1000 Independence Avenue, SW., Washington, DC 20585.

Submitting Public Comments

The comment period closes 60 days after publication in the Federal Register.

Any comments submitted must identify the NOPR for Energy Conservation Standards for Residential Dehumidifiers, and provide docket number EERE-2012–BT–STD–0027 and/or regulatory information number (RIN) number 1904-AC81.  Comments may be submitted using any of the following methods: 

1. Federal eRulemaking Portal: www.regulations.gov.  Follow the instructions for submitting comments. 

2. E-mail: ResDehumidifier2012STD0027@ee.doe.gov. Include the docket number and/or RIN in the subject line of the message.

3. Postal Mail: Ms. Brenda Edwards, U.S. Department of Energy, Building Technologies Office, Mailstop EE-5B, 1000 Independence Avenue, SW., Washington, DC, 20585-0121.  If possible, please submit all items on a compact disc (CD), in which case it is not necessary to include printed copies.

DOE is conducting a test procedure rulemaking for residential dehumidifiers and recently published a notice of proposed rulemaking regarding test procedures for dehumidifiers. 79 FR 29271 (May 21, 2014). For more information, please see the rulemaking webpage.



Statutory Authority

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007) amended EPCA to prescribe energy conservation standards for residential dehumidifiers manufactured on or after October 1, 2012. DOE codified the EISA 2007 standards at 10 CFR 430.32(v)(2). 74 FR 12058 (March 23, 2009). During this rulemaking, DOE will determine whether to further amend the energy conservation standards for residential dehumidifiers. (42 U.S.C. 6295(cc))
