Hospital Energy Alliance Goals

The Hospital Energy Alliance is working to:

  • Harness the advanced technologies, analytical tools, and capabilities emerging from DOE and the national energy laboratories

  • Eliminate duplication and waste by creating and sharing evidence-based information on successful strategies

  • Serve as a unified industry voice to influence manufacturers and distributors on the demand for highly efficient products and services targeted by HEA members

  • Help DOE shape future R&D by clarifying the business needs and drivers unique to the hospital sector

  • Validate the energy and carbon reduction efforts of the nation's hospitals to both internal and external audiences, including the financial community

Opportunities identified to date are:

  • Quick wins such as developing a database of shared best practices for energy-efficient design and operation; a financing guide for purchasing high-performance hospital equipment; and guidelines for negotiating improved rate structures with utilities

  • Innovations such as improving legal and regulatory strategies for implementing new technologies; and impacting the R&D supply chain for the development of more energy-efficient, hospital-specific technologies

  • Game changers including rethinking the design and operation of hospitals to develop net-zero energy buildings; improving energy standards, codes, and regulations for hospitals; and improving technology procurement for hospitals, cross-coordinated with other energy alliances*
