Wal-Mart and Dow Chemical Among Energy Efficiency Awardees

The Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) honored Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Dow Chemical Company on September 12th as part of its annual awards ceremony for energy efficiency leaders. Wal-Mart received the 2006 Chairman's Award for its plan to reduce energy use in its existing stores by 20 percent, as well as its commitment to design and open a viable prototype store within four years that is 25 to 30 percent more energy efficient and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30 percent. The retailer is also installing auxiliary power units in its trucks to reduce idling and plans to add 100 hybrid vehicles to its corporate fleet each year. See the ASE press release.

In addition to Wal-Mart, Dow Chemical Company was one of six "Stars of Energy Efficiency" honored at the ceremony. Dow has exceeded its ten-year goal to improve its global energy efficiency by 20 percent and has also actively participated in DOE's "Save Energy Now" campaign. Dow Chemical was joined by the Trust Fund for Electric Energy Saving, an efficiency organization based in Mexico; the City of Syracuse, New York, and its mayor, Matthew Driscoll, which have cut the city's municipal energy use by 20 percent; the National Affordable Housing Network, a non-profit that has trained tens of thousands of contractors and builders in energy-efficient building practices; and Power Integrations, Inc., a pioneer in solid-state power supplies that minimize energy use when appliances are sitting idle.
