DOE Releases GATEWAY Report

September 1, 2009

The U.S. Department of Energy has published the first report from a ground-breaking demonstration of light-emitting diode (LED) roadway lighting on the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This GATEWAY demonstration report, prepared by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, provides an overview of initial project results, including lighting performance, economic performance, and potential energy savings. The project represents the first installation of LED lighting on a major interstate thoroughfare in the United States, and will provide an invaluable learning opportunity over the planned three-year monitoring period. Overall, the LED luminaires provided sufficient and notably uniform illumination and offered a conservative 13% energy savings relative to the baseline HPS system.
