Kitchen Windows and Doors
|
Seal gaps around windows and doors to stop drafts and inflated energy bills. |
Energy Facts: Air leaks decrease a home's energy efficiency and cause uncomfortable drafts. Most such problems can be easily remedied with weather-stripping and/or caulk from the local hardware store.
Scout It Out: Look for cracks and gaps around your windows and doors. On a windy day, put your hands around the edges to see if you can feel a breeze.
Tips:
- Caulk and weatherstrip first, then consider storm doors and windows. They cost less than new and can greatly improve the energy performance of your home if your original doors and windows are in reasonable shape.
- If you need to replace a door or window, choose an ENERGY STAR® qualified model. The energy performance of all ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors, and skylights is independently tested and certified according to test procedures established by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). The ENERGY STAR label will help you identify NFRC-certified products with superior energy performance.
