U.S. Department of Energy - Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Building Technologies Program
ENERGY STAR®
ENERGY STAR® is a voluntary labeling and recognition program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that seeks to accelerate the adoption of clean and efficient domestic energy technologies. On this page you'll find information about the ENERGY STAR program, including Home Performance with ENERGY STAR and ENERGY STAR campaigns.
The ENERGY STAR label helps businesses and consumers easily identify highly efficient products, homes, and buildings that save energy and money, while protecting the environment. In addition to lowering energy bills and reducing the pollution from power generation, ENERGY STAR helps meet America's energy needs and strengthen the U.S. economy.
DOE conducts research, development, and deployment to improve the energy efficiency of existing homes using a whole-building approach, which results in the most cost-effective retrofit measures. The Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program combines DOE's residential research with ENERGY STAR's outreach capabilities to promote energy-efficient home retrofits.
The program is managed by a local sponsor, such as a utility, state agency, or local government, that recruits home improvement contractors who are qualified to perform comprehensive home assessments. The assessment is based on a whole-house approach and includes the heating and cooling systems, windows, insulation, flow of air into and out of the house, as well as a safety check of gas appliances. Based on this assessment, participating contractors offer solutions to fix comfort problems and address high energy bills.

ENERGY STAR Campaigns
DOE works to promote the work of ENERGY STAR by implementing a variety of campaigns. Recent efforts include an appliance recycling campaign and a program that works with the military to increase the use of ENERGY STAR light bulbs. Read more about these.
