DOE Presents "Staying Ahead of the Legislative Curve"
May 22, 2008
On May 19, 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored the "Building for the 21st Century Lecture Series" held at the National Building Museum, featuring Mary Luevano, Policy and Legislative Affairs Director for Global Green USA.
Global Green USA is the U.S. affiliate of Green Cross International, which was founded by Mikhail Gorbachev in order to create a new approach to solving the world's most pressing environmental challenges by reconnecting humanity to the environment. Global Green USA is working to build affordable green housing, advance renewable energy, and protect the climate.
Ms. Luevano addressed the work Global Green is doing to affect policies that will encourage energy efficient building practices. Ms. Luevano offered many examples of these efforts:
- Increasing the energy efficiency of public housing.
- Incorporating energy efficiency goals in the 2009 International Codes published by the International Code Council (ICC).
- Working with the California legislature to propose policies that would require new construction to be Net Zero in the future.
Global Green creates partnerships with cities, developers, and non-profit organizations to provide green building support. They can help groups with workshops, green building program development, and policy guidance.
