Many resources are available from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and others to help retailers improve their energy performance. Here you will find links to selected Web sites.
Commercial Building Energy Alliances
DOE is creating Commercial Building Energy Alliances (CBEA) with the goal of minimizing the energy and environmental impact of commercial buildings and reducing energy costs for these buildings. The CBEA will focus on retail, commercial, and institutional buildings. The Retailer Energy Alliance is the first one of the commercial alliances to be organized. Visit the Commercial Building Energy Alliances site to learn more about this program.
Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Retail Buildings
This guide was developed by the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers, in cooperation with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, the American Institute of Architects, the U.S. Green Building Council, and DOE. Application of the recommendations in the guide could result in small retail buildings achieving 30% energy savings when compared to those same retail buildings designed to the minimum code requirements. The guide is available as a free download from the ASHRAE Web site.
Advanced Energy Efficiency Design Strategies in Retail Buildings
This is a case study of two U.S. Retail Buildings designed and constructed using the energy design process released in 2000 by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The study looked at the Big Horn Center in Silverthorne, Colorado, and the Zion National Park Visitor Center in Springdale, Utah. Learn more by reading the conference paper (PDF 275 KB).
