Recovery Act Announcement: DOE Releases Funding Opportunities for Solid-State Lighting
June 29, 2009
As part of the ongoing effort to reduce national energy consumption through high-efficiency building technologies, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced that it will provide $50 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to advance research, development, and market adoption of solid-state lighting (SSL) technology.
The majority of the Recovery Act funding will be directed toward two existing DOE SSL R&D program areas for Product Development and Core Technology Research, plus a third new program area that will focus on accelerating SSL manufacturing improvements that lower the cost and enhance the performance of SSL products.
The manufacturing funding opportunity seeks projects that will achieve significant cost reductions through improvements in manufacturing equipment, processes, or monitoring techniques. Selected projects will address technical challenges that must be overcome before prices fall to a level where SSL can compete with existing lighting on a first-cost basis. By supporting these activities, DOE can accelerate progress toward creating a U.S.-led market for high-efficiency light sources that save more energy, reduce costs, and have less environmental impact than other conventional light sources. The funding opportunity for product development projects is the sixth round in a series of annual solicitations. Product development projects focus on using the knowledge gained from basic or applied research to develop or improve commercially viable materials, devices, or systems. Selected projects will develop targeted market applications with fully defined price, efficacy, and other performance parameters necessary for success of the proposed product. Core Technology Research
Also a sixth-round funding opportunity, core technology projects focus on applied research for technology development, with particular emphasis on meeting efficiency, performance, and cost targets. Selected projects will fill technology gaps or provide enabling knowledge or data. Additional Recovery Act funding will be directed to enhance existing market deployment programs such as CALiPER testing and GATEWAY demonstrations, and workshops that engage market partners. DOE will announce more details on the market deployment activities soon.
