Bio-based Thermochromic Intelligent Roof Coating Research Project

The Department of Energy is conducting research into bio-based thermochromic intelligent roof coatings. The coatings are developed from waste cooking oil.

Project Description

This project seeks to develop and demonstrate a waste cooking oil-based thermochromic smart roof coating technology that will adjust light transmission in response to temperature changes. This will reduce energy demands for temperature regulation. The project will also study the effects of different oil sources on coating properties.

Project Partners

This project is being undertaken between the Department of Energy and United Environment & Energy.

Project Goals

The goal of this project is to demonstrate coating technology at a weathering facility and conduct field testing in order to determine coating effectiveness. The project will conclude with an economic analysis of the new coating technology.

Benefits and Impacts

The new coating material will reduce a building's overall energy consumption by regulating the roof's transmission of visible light on the basis of temperature. The coatings are made from agricultural products, making them renewable, cheap, and environmentally friendly. Thermochromic roof coatings are easy to implement and save consumers money by reducing energy consumption.
