Ground Source Heap Pump Data Mining Research Project

The U.S. Department of Energy is currently conducting research into ground source heat pump (GSHP) data mining. This project seeks to build public awareness of GSHP technology through the development of case studies outlining costs and benefits.

Project Description

This project seeks to produce in-depth case studies on the costs and benefits of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -funded GSHP demonstration projects, including cross-cutting summaries of lessons learned and best practices for design, installation, and operation.

Project Partners

Research is being undertaken between the Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Project Goals

The goals of this project include increasing public awareness of and trust in GSHP technology, and to identify good and bad practices in the design, installation, and operation of GSHP systems. The hard data on the costs and benefits collected from the Recovery Act-funded GSHP demonstration projects will help break this barrier. In addition, comprehensive analysis of these GSHP systems could provide value to the industry.

Benefits and Impacts

Successful development of GSHP case studies can foster greater project activity in across the United States, expanding the areas where robust GSHP design and installation infrastructures exist. With improved design, reduced cost, and increased public awareness and trust, it is expected that GSHP systems could capture 10% of the target market segments by 2030.
