Beyond a Billion
In 2004, Clean Cities recently reached the milestone of displacing more than 1 billion gallons of petroleum. The 88 Clean Cities coalitions helped achieve this by implementing alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, fuel blends, heavy-truck idle reduction applications, and general fuel economy improvements to help reduce the nation's need for imported oil.
On Friday October 14, 2005, Clean Cities coalitions across the country held local events to celebrate displacing more than a billion gallons of petroleum, which is enough to fuel 2 million cars for a year.
The events were very successful. More than 50 coalitions participated in the celebration; there was local television, radio, and internet news coverage; numerous dignitaries and key speakers participated; many alternative fuel and advanced vehicles were on hand; and the symbolic billionth gallon was pumped at many events.
Clean Cities' next goal is to displace 2.5 billion gallons of petroleum per year by 2020. That is the equivalent of the annual gasoline consumption of 5 million cars or taking one supertanker off the high seas every eight days.
