Electric Vehicle Community Readiness Projects
On Sept. 8, 2011, Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced awards for 16 electric vehicle projects totaling $8.5 million. These projects in 24 states and the District of Columbia helped communities prepare for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and charging infrastructure. Through these awards, local public-private partnerships collaborated on plans to deploy electric vehicles, a strategy that helps reduce U.S. petroleum dependency and build a clean transportation future.
Community Readiness Plans
Depending on local needs, each awardee created a PEV community readiness plan that includes activities such as streamlining permitting processes, revising codes, training emergency personnel, educating the public, and developing incentives.
For a summary of the most important conclusions from these community readiness plans, see the Guide to Lessons Learned. Paired with the PEV Readiness Scorecard, this guide can help communities find best practices for areas where they could improve.
