Azure Dynamics to Supply 18 Hybrid Electric Shuttles to North Texas COG
June 9, 2010
Azure Dynamics has a new contract with the North Central Texas Council of Governments for 18 Balance Hybrid Electric shuttle buses. The buses will be used primarily in five different rural transit systems in the North Central Texas area. The buses were funded via an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Transit Capital Assistance program grant. The Dallas-Fort Worth Clean Cities coalition and North Central Texas Council of Governments staff assisted with the specs on the RFP. The company partnered with StarTrans Bus to provide the bus bodies and Lasseter Bus and Mobility to manage the transaction.
The Azure Balance Hybrid Electric features engine-off at idle plus regenerative braking to capture energy lost in stopping. Its technology is integrated on a Ford E450 chassis with a 5.4L Triton gasoline engine and a five-speed automatic TorqShift transmission. The vehicles are ADA accessible and equipped with lifts for wheelchair passengers.
Azure Dynamics vice president of sales Jay Sandler predicts the shuttles will deliver up to a 40% fuel economy improvement coupled with reduced maintenance costs and positive environmental benefits.
