Clean Cities Program Structure

Clean Cities is funded and managed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Clean Cities is supported and managed with the assistance of program staff from DOE headquarters, national laboratories, and technical contractors.

The Clean Cities staff is located throughout the United States and has the following roles and responsibilities:

Clean Cities Coordinators run the local coalition and manage the work in their area. Clean Cities program staff provides technical assistance and support. Coordinators created a Coordinator Council, a working group of coordinators that represents coalition interests to Clean Cities program staff.

Clean Cities DOE Headquarters

National leadership works to sustain and guide a strong network of Clean Cities coalitions focused on a cohesive initiative. National headquarters support staff includes DOE employees and contractors. The Clean Cities director and co-director and their support staff are based out of DOE headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Regional Managers

Seven DOE regional managers each support the efforts of coordinators within a particular region. They also administer and monitor Clean Cities grant and financial assistance projects. Six are based at the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Pennsylvania or West Virginia, and one is based at DOE's Golden Field Office in Colorado.

Coalition Coordinators

Clean Cities coalition coordinators work at the local level to develop and implement strategic plans to reduce petroleum use in the cities and counties they serve. The map of coalition locations demonstrates the breadth of Clean Cities' nationwide reach. National Laboratories

Several national laboratories provide programmatic and technical assistance for Clean Cities.

Coordinator Council

The Clean Cities Coordinator Council is a working group composed of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) representatives, Clean Cities coordinators, and program staff from the National Energy Technology Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
