Project Development for Coalitions: I-65 Biofuels Corridor

The Interstate 65 (I-65) Biofuels Corridor is a great example of how Clean Cities coalitions can team up on major projects to enhance alternative fuel infrastructure and reduce petroleum use.

In 2006, five coalitions (Central Indiana, South Shore Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama) and two state energy offices (Indiana and Alabama) received a $1.3 million U.S. Department of Energy grant to create a biofuels corridor on I-65. The corridor now features 21 E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) and five B20 (20% biodiesel, 80% petroleum diesel) dispensers. The project culminated in a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV) drive along the length of I-65, accompanied by media events.

The documents in this Project Development Toolkit reflect the team's collective work as well as individual approaches. The "Lessons Learned" report summarizes lessons learned by the project partners. The "I-65 Corridor Drive Press Kit" contains documents the Indiana Office of Energy Development used to promote the national FFV drive. The documents listed under the names of individual coalitions were used in these coalitions' workshops and events. The documents under "Other Materials" were used by all the coalitions.
