Navigation Overview
The template navigation is designed to be flexible so you can provide access to your site's content in a way that makes sense to your target audience. You will need to use the following types of navigation for EERE sites.
Note that audience-specific cuts to your content that are office- or program-wide will be handled in a common way across all 10 sites; contact the EERE Information Architect for more information.
Top Navigation
Access to the major content sections of an EERE Web site. The top, or "site-wide" navigation will appear on every page of the site.
Left Navigation
A vertical bar of additional menu choices on the left side of the page that is used to navigate within a section of a site (sections are accessed from the top navigation). Left navigation is also used to navigate within a program subsite. Office sites use left navigation as their site-wide navigation. More information
Right Navigation
Access to content that changes periodically, such as events, news, and features. The information can be program- or office-wide, or specific to a particular subsite. More information
Site Utilities
Access to additional tools that can help users find content on the program or office site. The tools include a search box, site map, subject index, and a link to the EERE Information Center. Utilities are located on the right side of the header, and are program- or office-wide. More information
Footer Navigation
Access to the Webmaster, security & privacy notices, the program or office home page, and the EERE home page. More information
Other Navigation
You can use the content area in the middle of the screen for additional in-text navigation, or to highlight sections of content that are popular with your target audience.
An information architect can help you structure the content for your site and ensure that your audience can access the information they need in a way that is useful.
