Print Guidelines - Frequently Asked Questions

The development and dissemination of communications standards and guidelines are evolving processes that require cooperation, teamwork, and clear communication. This section is designed to provide answers to frequently asked questions, and will be updated regularly to reflect the latest questions and issues we encounter. We welcome your questions and feedback so we can improve the information on this site.

Do we have to redo all our existing materials?

Programs should continue to use their existing stock of materials until that stock is close to depletion.

Decisions about the need to modify existing materials to align the look and messages more closely with EERE requirements will be made on a case-by-case basis. Some programs, like ENERGY STAR®, have already invested heavily in branding and established extensive partner and consumer buy-in. Also, as a joint EPA/DOE program, ENERGY STAR must comply with its own unique set of communications standards.

Older documents may require more than simple design modifications to ensure they reflect the latest Technology Advancement and Outreach (TAO) strategies and EERE messages. Each document must be reviewed on an individual basis by the appropriate TAO personnel before a determination can be made.

If we do need to make modifications, who pays for it?

The programs must pay for any required modifications to existing documents.
