Redirects and Proxies

If your site's URL has changed or you have an application that can't be supported on the EERE server, you may need a redirect or proxy. Below are the requirements and criteria.

Redirects

EERE uses two types of redirects to address changed URLs or special-case situations:

  • Bookmarks — Redirects that forward users to notification pages that request they update any bookmarks. These pages contain links to new destination pages.

  • Seamless redirects — Seamless redirects forward users on to other URLs without notification.

When a redirect is created, it should be assigned one of three classifications:

  • Short-term bookmark
    • In place for 6 months
    • Used for single pages and low-traffic sites that have changed URLs
  • Long-term bookmark
    • In place for 1 year
    • Used for office-level, deployment, and other large or high-traffic sites that have changed URLs
  • Permanent seamless redirect
    • In place permanently or indefinitely
    • Used to correct common user URL errors or in special-case situations
    • Must be approved by the Web Governance Team. Contact the Web Governance Team Facilitator for information on how to start this process.

Proxies

Some Web sites have applications with unique requirements that may not be supported on the central EERE server. In those cases, we can set up a proxy so your site can have the EERE domain name.

The criteria for establishing proxies are:

  1. The Web site has unique applications that are either too complex to move to the central EERE server or that are not supported.

  2. The Web site must be in the EERE template and go through the review process (including a quality assurance review).
