U.S. Department of Energy - Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Energy Education & Workforce Development

Fellowships

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and various other organizations and institutions offer fellowship opportunities across the country—from Washington, D.C., to Dayton, Ohio, to Golden, Colorado, and beyond—for students and faculty alike.

DOE-Sponsored

Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program
This program selects distinguished K-12 mathematics and science teachers to serve in professional staff positions for up to one year in Congress or at a federal agency.

ARPA-E Fellows Program
Participants in DOE's Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) Fellows Program will actively help create the strategic direction and vision of the country's first agency devoted exclusively to transformational energy technology research and development. Fellows will support program directors in program creation, in addition to undertaking independent explorations of promising future research areas for ARPA-E.

Education Websites at DOE Labs and Facilities
Find links to all the education programs at DOE laboratories and facilities, many of which offer student internships and fellowships.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Science and Technology Policy (STP) Fellowships
The EERE STP Fellowships will serve as the next step in the educational and professional development of leaders in energy efficiency and renewable energy policy, providing an opportunity for scientists and engineers with relevant energy technology experience to participate in policy-related projects at DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Washington, D.C. This program will support theĀ SunShot Initiative by providing support to Fellows interested in research and development of programs to achieve the goal of $1 per watt utility-level installed photovoltaics by 2020.

Graduate Automotive Technology Education
This DOE program helps universities sponsor student fellowships and develop graduate-level curricula, with accompanying research, in five critical technology areas: fuel cells, hybrid drive trains and control systems, lightweight materials, direct-injection engines, and advanced energy storage.

Hydro Fellowship Program
Funded by a DOE award of $1 million, the Hydro Research Foundation's competitive Hydro Fellowship Program will award two-year fellowships for up to 26 graduate and doctoral level students to conduct relevant research in the field of hydropower-related engineering, environmental and biologic sciences, analysis, or economics.

Minority University Research Associates Program
DOE developed the MURA Program to encourage minority students to pursue careers in science and technology. Funded by the Solar Energy Technologies Program, MURA supports research associates and professors/principal investigators from selected schools as they perform renewable energy research projects during the academic year.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory: Sabbaticals and Faculty Appointments
Learn about sabbatical opportunities at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for senior scientists or engineers who have established records of research productivity and accomplishments and who are on leave from an academic, business, or governmental institution.

Office of Science: Graduate Fellowship Program
DOE's Office of Science has established the Graduate Fellowship Program, supporting outstanding students who are pursuing graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences.

American Association for Advancement of Science Fellowships

AAAS Fellowships, which provide the opportunity for scientists and engineers to learn about policy-making in energy efficiency and renewable energy while contributing their knowledge and analytical skills to the federal government.
