Session 4 (9:00 - 10:30)

Session A - Federal-Sector Operations Success Stories
Got your radio turned up so you can hear the news? The Federal sector has some great new success stories to share with you. Take the expressway to our discussion and learn about what GSA has done to automate building diagnostics at one of their court houses. The Energy Expert Tool is an automated diagnostic tool that compares the building's actual electric use to the building's modeled electric use and determines if it is operating correctly given the conditions experienced. But that's not all! Your road trip includes hearing one of DOE's energy experts explain how, through some simple operational changes, GSA's Philadelphia's Custom House has implemented a 'pre-cooling' strategy that is saving more than $50,000 in demand charges. That'll leave you enough change for the tollbooths ahead. Could these success stories be your success stories? You won't know if you don't hop on down and listen.
Presenters: Phil Coleman, LBNL; Ben Zeiders, GSA; Patrick O'Neil, Northwrite, Inc.

Session B - The Energy Apprentice (Reality Training Meets Energy Management)
Make the short trip to join us for a one-of-a-kind event—reality training meets energy efficiency. Get behind us in line and follow the actions and activities of a group of would-be energy efficiency/facility maintenance apprentices. These apprentices (and the audience) will be challenged to respond to a few carefully thought-out building efficiency scenarios presented by none-other than Ronald Thrump, a.k.a. 'The Ronald.' Come listen as The Ronald quizzes the energy apprentices on efficiency improvements common to many federal facilities. Each scenario will be met with two or three solutions as presented by the would-be apprentices. Each solution will be considered by The Ronald for its energy and operational efficiency. Then, after some discussion with a little give-and-take, the would-be apprentice will be...well, you'll have to Open our roadmap and come and find out for yourself.
Presenters: Cedrick Davis, NASA; Brian Hashimoto, Ameresco; Fred Speece, TetraTech

Session 5 (11:00 - Noon)

Session A - Heavy Metal: Worth the Upkeep... or a Boat Anchor to Efficiency?
Check out your rear-view mirror for a clear view of those so-called heavy metal of many buildings and facilities—the old yet functional heating and cooling plants of yesterday. See those big and the old boilers, chillers, hot water generators and heat exchangers? Our ride will take you to a close look, from an operations perspective at this equipment. While the equipment may be big and old, should it be replaced on those grounds alone? What about spending a fraction of the cost of the replacement equipment and use these funds to retune and refurbish and possibly expand the usage of the existing equipment? Under what conditions should the focus be to refurbish versus replace? Are there operational issues of the new, high-tech, replacement equipment that need to be considered? Just what are the best options to achieve operational efficiency? This session gives you easy-to-follow directions to cut through the sales pitch and help the facility manager walk away with right questions to ask when deciding Heavy Metal: Worth the Upkeep ...or a Boat Anchor to Efficiency.

Session B - On-site Power: The Muscle Car of the Facility World
On-site power can be one of the most cost-effective opportunities for the Federal sector, depending on utility rates, rate structures, and energy use. Beyond the paper study, though, is the reality of daily operations, up-time, life-health-safety issues, and the environmental aspects of these systems. Get behind the wheel and follow our roadmap to hear the Veterans Administration experience of a successful on-site power installation, its operation and lessons learned. The trip will get your questions answered so you can decide for yourself if this could be your next efficiency opportunity.

Session 6 (2:00 - 3:30)

Session A - Under the Hood: The Top Recommissioning Measures to Maintain Efficiency
Drive to just about any building or facility and you'll find numerous opportunities for building recommissioning activities. Some of these activities are very common and can yield significant savings, while others are more obscure and offer variable savings. Is it possible that Pareto's Principle, the 80-20 rule, could be applied to building recommissioning? Are there a handful of recommissioning measures that come up time-and-time again in Federal sector facilities and garner the lion's-share of the savings? The only way to find out is to follow our roadmap to a brighter future and hear what the experts have to say about this. Learn about those most-common recommissioning activities, how to find them, and what they could mean for savings at your facilities. It's a trip well worth taking.

Session B - Professional Development Opportunities in Facilities Management
You don't need a TripTik to know that one-size of training doesn't fit all. To further complicate matters, offerings abound from classroom-based and hands-on training to in-house and on-line learning. How do you sort through the myriad of options for your professional development goals? Get on our road to hear the training experts and ask your professional development questions of these experts! Join us as we hear from facility training experts representing a variety of public, private, and non-profit professional development organizations. We've adjusted the speedometer so that each representative will be given enough time to explain their program, its objectives and format, and then the audience will be encouraged to engage with questions and comments. Come ready with your questions and get set to have them answered.

Session A - Advanced Metering Showcase: A Hitch-Hiker's Guide for Advanced Building Metering
Like the new gadgets on your car's dashboard, your building's electric meters and data loggers aren't like they used to be. No, today's models are advanced electric meters providing a host of electric data and signal capture features as well as advanced communications options. The meter-reader doesn't come out to your place with his notepad any more. Instead, he or she now sits in a comfortable office with network connections to the building meters where data can be downloaded and the process of converting data to information easily done remotely. Join us on our review of the roadmap to a brighter future and you'll receive an overview of advanced meters, their features and capabilities, giving you a solid understanding and application to your facilities through presentations and a metering show case.

Session B - Need a Tune-Up? The ESET Low-Cost / No-Cost Building Efficiency Approach
The Energy Savings Expert Team (ESET) results are in and they are very impressive. The ESET program, an activity designed to stave off high winter-time natural gas rates through the identification of low-cost/no-cost efficiency measures at 25 Federal sites, has proven to be a worthy and productive activity. Reading the roadmap to a brighter future that we give you, you'll find a full description of this activity that you can easily follow, including learning about its genesis, technical protocols, staffing and results. This session will not only communicate the results, but also offer easy-to-follow instructions on what was done, how it was done, with what equipment and the resulting savings. Come on down to learn about achievable low-cost/no-cost energy savings at your Federal facility and get ready for the heating season of 2006.

The benefits to facility management and control systems are limited only by the creativity and experience of the system operators. This session is designed to share those trade secrets as they apply to the Federal sector. Meet some drivers who made the trip already to particularly innovative and successful applications of control systems in the Federal sector. Come ready to ask our experts for directions to take you there, too, and walk away with the answers you need for your facilities.
