Energy Incentive Programs, Kansas
Updated October 2008
Below you will find questions and answers regarding Kansas's utility energy efficiency programs, including options for load management, demand response, and distributed energy resources, and information about state-sponsored energy efficiency programs.
What public-purpose-funded energy efficiency programs are available in my state?
Kansas has no public-purpose-funded energy efficiency programs.
What utility energy efficiency programs are available to me?
Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L) offers the following programs:
-
The Custom Rebate Retrofit Program provides rebates for projects with a societal benefit-cost ratio greater than 1. All projects are individually analyzed and the rebate is calculated as the lesser of a buy-down to a 2-year payback or 50% of the incremental cost. There are caps on the total amount of incentive available to a customer in a single six-month period.
-
The Prescriptive Rebate Program is available to customers operating under the small general service rate. Rebates cover lighting, air conditioning, and motors.
-
The Custom Rebate New Construction Program provides financial incentives for installing energy-efficient equipment (including HVAC systems, motors, variable speed drives, lighting, building controls, and pumps) with a societal benefit-cost ratio greater than 1. The rebate is calculated as the lesser of a buy-down to a 2-year payback or 50% of the incremental cost. There are caps on the total amount of incentive available to a customer in a single six-month period.
-
KCP&L offers qualified customers a $575 rebate for attending Building Operator Certification training to learn how to increase energy efficiency through operation and maintenance practices.
What load management/demand response options are available to me?
Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L) offers a number of load management programs:
-
The MPower program provides customers with credit for agreeing to reduce their load to a firm level (which KCP&L will help identify) during periods of peak demand. In exchange, customers receive a monthly credit for their curtailable load, regardless of whether any curtailment requests are made. Participants are also remunerated for their actual reductions in the cases when the program is called. Eligibility is open to customers with as little as 200 kW of load to shed.
-
Real Time Pricing allows participants to buy electricity at the real-time market price. Contact KCP&L's Business Center at BusinessCenter@kcpl.com for more information on this program.
What distributed energy resource options are available to me?
The Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy (DSIRE) provides information on programs that offer incentives for renewable distributed generation. Kansas currently has no programs of this type open to federal customers.
Are there energy efficiency programs sponsored by the state government?
No state energy efficiency programs are currently available to federal customers. For information on potential future opportunities, contact the Energy Office of the Kansas Corporation Commission.
What additional opportunities are available to me?
Federal customers also have energy efficiency opportunities available with utilities (such as KCP&L and Aquila) that have area-wide contracts with GSA and, by extension, all other federal agencies. Federal facilities should contact their account executive to determine the level of participation by their local utility.
NOTE: Energy efficiency funds and demand response programs are updated at least annually. Please contact the FEMP webmaster if changes are needed between updates.
