Energy Incentive Programs, Kansas

Updated October 2011

Kansas utilities budgeted over $14 million in 2010 across its various programs (including those directed at residential and low-income customers) to promote customer energy efficiency.

What public-purpose-funded energy efficiency programs are available in my state?

Kansas has no public-purpose-funded energy efficiency programs.

What utility energy efficiency programs are available to me?

For the past several years, Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L) offered incentive programs for its commercial and industrial customers in Kansas, including prescriptive rebates and custom incentives for new construction and retrofit projects. These programs were pilots and have ended. KCP&L intends to continue offering efficiency programs and make them permanent at some point. Visit the utility's Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency Rebate Programs page.

KPCL is still offering qualified Kansan customers a $575 rebate for attending Building Operator Certification training to learn how to increase energy efficiency through operation and maintenance practices.

What load management/demand response options are available to me?

Kansas City Power & Light (KCPL) offers a number of load management programs:

  • The MPower program provides an annual payment to customers who agree to reduce their load by a fixed amount (which KCP&L will help identify) during periods of peak demand. Participants are also remunerated for their actual reductions in the cases when the program is called. Eligibility is open to customers with as little as 25 kW of load to shed.

  • Real Time Pricing allows participants to buy electricity at the real-time market price. Contact KCPL's Business Center at BusinessCtr@kcpl.com for more information on this program.

What distributed energy resource options are available to me?

The Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) provides information on programs that offer incentives for renewable distributed generation.

The Kansas Energy Office runs the Renewable Energy Incentives Grant with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Grants of up to 25% of the cost (up to $250,000) are available for renewable energy projects.

Are there energy efficiency programs sponsored by the state government?

The Kansas Energy Office offers several energy efficiency programs funded by ARRA. One of these open to small federal customers is a low-cost revolving loan fund, administered by Efficiency Kansas, for energy audits and financing of efficiency measures. The maximum loan size is $30,000 and is paid back through a borrower's utility bill.

What additional opportunities are available to me?

Federal customers whose utilities have area-wide supply contracts through GSA (e.g., Atmos Energy Corporation, Aquila, Black Hills, and KCP&L), may be able to take advantage of 3rd-party financed energy efficiency projects called utility energy services contracts (UESCs). Information is available on GSA's Energy Center of Expertise Library Page. Federal facilities should contact their account executive to determine the level of each utility's participation.

NOTE: Energy efficiency funds and demand response programs are updated at least annually. Please contact the FEMP webmaster if changes are needed between updates.
