Energy Department Organizations, Employees Receive Awards for Energy Efficiency, Cost Savings

WASHINGTON, DC. -- Nine Energy Department organizations and two individuals were honored by the Department of Energy (DOE) today for implementing significant energy efficiency improvements at federal facilities around the country. Their efforts helped reduce energy consumption in DOE buildings in FY 2000 by more than 40 percent in British Thermal Unit (Btu) per gross square foot, compared to a FY 1985 baseline, exceeding the federal government's energy goals. The DOE Energy Management Awards are given each year by DOE's Federal Energy Management Program to recognize outstanding achievements in energy and water management.

"The Department of Energy is proud to recognize its employees and work teams for implementing innovative campaigns to reduce energy consumption and lower energy costs," said Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham. "This spirit of teamwork demonstrates that the President's goals of energy efficiency outlined in his National Energy Plan are achievable and save energy and tax dollars."

David Garman, Assistant Secretary of Energy for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, presented the awards in a ceremony held at the Forrestal headquarters building in Washington, D.C. The awards ceremony is a highlight of Energy Awareness Month celebrated each October.

The accomplishments of this year's winners include:

• Constructing a thermal energy storage system into an existing chilled water plant that avoided the major expense of constructing a new chilled water plant and lowered operating expenses.
• Installing air-conditioning equipment with the highest energy efficiency to minimize the operating expenses of a new computer facility.
• Initiating a comprehensive campaign of energy-saving strategies at all the buildings of a national laboratory to optimize energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.

The DOE Energy Management Awards recognize efforts that have paid off in real progress toward energy efficiency goals set for the government by the President and Congress. These projects also have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by lowering energy use and utilizing environmentally-friendly renewable resources and practices. The Department of Energy researches, develops and supports clean, efficient, and renewable energy technologies to help meet America's energy needs while protecting the environment and strengthening the economy.
