Navy Exchange Opens Oceana E85 Flex-Fuel Pump

March 16, 2009

Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, Navy Exchange (NEX) opened an E85 flex-fuel gas pump March 13, 2009. The pump provides the Navy with needed access to E85 for its flex-fuel vehicles and helps meet Federal alternative-fuel requirements.

E85 contains 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, and is used to fuel flex-fuel vehicles. It is considered an alternative fuel under the Energy Policy Act of 1992. For more information on E85, visit the Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center.

Federal agencies are required by the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 to reduce petroleum consumption by 20% each year compared to a 2005 baseline. Alternative fuel is an essential tool in accomplishing this requirement. EISA stipulates that agencies increase alternative fuel use by 10% each year. The FEMP Web site outlines this, and other, Federal alternative fuel requirements.

The pump opening marks the first publicly-accessible E85 facility in the area and the second Navy-operated alternative fuel supply pump in the state of Virginia. The NEX also supplies alternative fuel at its Quarters K gas station outside the Pentagon in Arlington.
