Keep Vehicles Cooler and Reduce Petroleum Use
Federal fleet managers can take many steps to increase vehicle fuel efficiency. FEMP encourages drivers to reduce air-conditioning loads by:
- Driving light-colored vehicles
- Improving vehicle ventilation
- Using windshield sun reflectors
Learn more about improving vehicle fuel efficiency in sections 5.3 through 5.5 of the Federal Fleet Management Handbook .
In locations where alternative fuel is unavailable or where infrastructure development is unlikely, advanced vehicle technologies may be utilized.
Advanced powertrains (e.g., hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fuel cell, battery electric, etc.) are being deployed at select locations, and FEMP is actively monitoring their success. Information on the availability of these technologies as well as their performance is shared at INTERFUEL.
The following advanced vehicle technology resources can help fleet managers identify the advanced vehicles best suited for their needs.
