Energy Awareness Month 2009: A Sustainable Energy Future; Putting All the Pieces Together

Image of the 2009 Energy Awareness Poster. In the center is an image of a map of the U.S. made out of puzzle pieces that become disassembled in Texas and the Southwest. Each puzzle piece contains a sustainable energy picture. The title 'A Sustainable Energy Future; We're Putting All the Pieces Together' is on top with the following caption in the lower right: Be part of the solution to climate change and help build a clean energy economy.

President Barack Obama proclaimed October 2009 as National Energy Awareness Month. FEMP's theme this year encourages everyone to see themselves as a piece of the puzzle fitting into the big picture. Download the 2009 poster to promote energy awareness all year long. (PDF 6.5 MB)

No matter how large the problem may appear, the fact remains that each of us is a part of the solution. Every day, each of us makes decisions that can stimulate sustainability and a new energy economy. When we put all the pieces together, all of us — the Federal Government, private industry, and the public — have the means to shape our energy future and move our nation toward energy independence.

Outreach Materials and Resources

Each October for Energy Awareness Month, FEMP provides materials and ideas to help promote energy-saving practices at Federal facilities. Resources include posters and other energy awareness materials carrying FEMP's Energy Awareness Month outreach message.

The 2009 Energy Awareness Month promotional materials remind Federal employees to switch off unnecessary lights and equipment, use efficient ENERGY STAR® products and compact fluorescent light bulbs, and drive fuel-efficient and alternative fuel vehicles. Available outreach materials include a posters, bookmarks, room temperature cards, and notepads. Federal agencies participating in the You Have the Power awareness campaign receive a supply of these materials.

To create your own printed materials, order You have the Power: Power Kit on CD ROM. The CD contains high-resolution graphics of Energy Awareness Month 2009 materials as well as the Creating an Energy Awareness Program guidebook (PDF 3.8 MB). A copy of the 2009 Energy Awareness Month poster is currently available for download and printing.

Contact the EERE Information Center for the 2009 Energy Awareness Months promotional materials and the Power Kit CD starting September 17, 2009.

Promoting Energy Awareness Month

FEMP's animated energy awareness messages promote energy awareness during Energy Awareness Month and all year round. These messages can be sent out as a mass mailing or attached to individual e-mail messages as a simple, cost-free way for agencies to spread the word about energy efficiency. The animated gif files and low-resolution campaign graphics are available for download.

FEMP's frequently asked questions are helpful for getting ideas for energy awareness approaches and activities. In addition, FEMP offers tips on how to save energy at your office, facility and in your home. And the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Savers Consumers Guide offers tips on energy efficiency and renewable energy. Additional information about energy efficiency and energy savings is also available on the EERE Web site.
