The Department of Defense Army and Air Force Exchange Service is a joint military activity providing quality merchandise and services to active duty, Guard and Reserve members, military retirees, and their families. The Fort Hood Warrior Way Express in Fort Hood, Texas, is a convenience store with gas, food, and liquor. It has two large walk-in coolers, one walk-in freezer, three large ice-making machines, and multiple self-contained reach-in coolers.
Energy reduction at the Fort Hood Warrior Way convenience store was accomplished through several innovative strategies including energy audits, the installation of energy conservation measures, and rebate management with a single national vendor contract. Among extensive energy savings, this strategy also substantially reduced project costs, project management, and costly negotiations among multiple vendors. Energy improvements included:
- An extensive building management system
- The Wattstopper lighting control system
- A 24-channel power monitoring system
- A HVAC control thermostat with economizer control
- Walk-in temperature sensors, perimeter, and walk-in door position sensors
- Electronically commutated motors replaced the shaded pole motors for evaporator coils in walk-in coolers and freezers
- Occupancy sensors to control the product lights which illuminated only when customers are in the product area
- LED light bars replaced T12 fluorescent product lights
- Reflectors were upgraded from 50% reflectance to 94% reflectance
- Bulbs were changed and reduced from 4x32 W bulbs to 2x28 W bulbs with an extended 50,000-hour life
- Ballasts were replaced with high efficiency ballasts
- Storage, restrooms, and break area were changed to occupancy sensors.
As a result of the improvements, Fort Hood's Warrior Way energy use was decreased by 44% compared to same month average use from previous years.
