DOE's Germantown Facility (Germantown, MD)

Department of Energy

Without sacrificing occupant comfort, health, or safety, DOE implemented numerous energy conservation projects at its Germantown Facility resulting in an ENERGY STAR® Building Award. Energy efficient features included a building-wide energy management control system, high-efficiency windows and lighting, and HVAC retrofits and upgrades. As part of DOE's commitment to support renewable energy sources, the facility also purchased 2.8 billion Btu of green power from the local utility for two years, accounting for 8 percent of their electric power consumption. As a result of these measures, the facility achieved energy reductions of more than 41 percent over the 1985 baseline and cost savings of almost $2.7 million in FY 2002.
