Department of Health and Human Services

The Food and Drug Administration’s Jefferson Laboratories - housing the National Center for Toxicological Research and the Arkansas Regional Laboratory - consists of 1.2 million sq. ft. of energy-intensive laboratory space located in 38 buildings on 496 acres. To reduce energy consumption, the facility entered into a Utility Energy Services Contract with Entergy Arkansas to install $10 million in energy-saving measures. These included variable frequency drives, energy-efficient lighting, variable air volume fume hoods, daylighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, variable volume pumping, district cooling, exhaust air energy recovery, and free-cooling economizer cycles. These measures save 39% in energy costs totaling $848,000 a year. The 10 year net savings will total $1.3 million.
