The Department of Energy's Forrestal Headquarters building achieved a score of 88 on the ENERGY STAR rating scale, outperforming almost 90 percent of office buildings nationwide. The building includes energy efficient motors and air handling equipment; high-efficiency chilledwater and hot-water pumps; automated HVAC controls; energy efficient lighting; and photovoltaic (PV) solar arrays. A 205 kilowatt PV system was installed on the roof providing up to 8 percent of the building's electricity demand. The building uses 40 percent less energy than the average office building and saves 28 million pounds of CO2 emissions and thousands of taxpayer dollars each year.
