Seattle Terminal Radar Approach Control Facility (Burien, WA)

Department of Transportation

The Seattle Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility operates 24/7 at one of the busiest airports in the world. Designed to achieve a 14 percent reduction in whole building energy and a 33 percent reduction in potable water use, it is the Department of Transportation's first building to achieve Gold LEED™ certification. The project used locally-harvested and recycled building materials to ensure a sustainable construction site. On-site storage and discharge of stormwater provides significant enhancement of wetland and stream environments. Indoor air quality and occupant satisfaction are achieved with low-VOC paints, carpets, adhesives, and furniture, as well as enhanced thermal comfort, daylighting, and views.
