Training

Opportunities to learn more about sustainable design and practices are available throughout the year. Workshops and other training events, sponsored by FEMP and other organizations, provide federal personnel with essential information and skills needed to plan, implement, and manage sustainable buildings and sites. FEMP's training offerings appear on its events calendar.

Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG) Continuing Education

The WBDG now offers FREE distance continuing education courses based on content in the WBDG. The courses featured offer an introduction to whole building design concepts as well as more specific applications for design objectives, building types and operations and maintenance.

An online test of 15 to 20 questions—multiple choice or true/false—follows the reading of the course material. Upon successful passing of the test, participants receive a certificate of completion and related continuing education credits for reporting to the agency and professional licensing board of their choice. Each course has been approved for a minimum of 1.5 Learning Units in the area of Health, Safety and Welfare under the American Institute of Architect Continuing Education System (AIA/CES).

To learn more and earn the professional continuing education credits you need visit www.wbdg.org and check out the courses listed under Continuing Education.

Design Strategies for Low-Energy, Sustainable, Secure Buildings Workshop

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn more about incorporating security, sustainability, and safety requirements into building design. How buildings use energy plays a critical role in integrating these three complex needs.

The course teaches the fundamentals of an integrated whole building design approach that considers the structure and systems as a whole and examines how they work best together to save energy and reduce environmental impact. You will learn about building durability and security in concert with sustainability, "zero-energy" buildings, green power, renewable energy technologies and distributed generation. The topics apply to new building and retrofits for all federal building types. This year's course will cover the impact of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 on federal buildings.

Creating Sustainable Federal Buildings Web Cast

This FEMP training web cast was recorded live on January 11-12, 2005 to provide an introduction to sustainable design and operations. Answers to questions asked during the workshop are available here (PDF 71 KB, 12 pp). Download Adobe Reader.

You can visit the web cast resource list which list web sites, contacts, books and more mentioned in the web cast and download associated resource materials (ZIP 2.3 MB) from the web cast including information on EPA's Target Finder Internet tool, BuildingGreen's Environmental Building News™, the Job Site Waste Management Action Plan Form, Construction Waste Management specifications and more.

The archived web cast site contains a recorded version of the web cast, downloadable slides, and speaker biographies. You may access this web site at any time by following these steps:

1.  Open your firewall (in order to hear sound)

  1. Visit the web cast help desk at www.vcall.com/vcall/support/systemtest.aspx
  2. Select "Test my computer first"
  3. If you do not pass the test, go to the following link and try another event listed on the web cast company's site http://www.vcall.com/. If the sound still does not work, you must contact your IT professional to deactivate the firewall and open Port 80
  4. Alternatively, you may access the web cast from another location that does not have strict firewalls

2.  Once your system is configured, you may begin by going to the web cast site. You will be prompted for user information before entering the site.
