This financial opportunity seeks to develop transformational industrial processes and equipment to reduce the energy intensity and carbon footprint of the U.S. manufacturing industry. The emphasis is on new processes and technologies that can be commercialized within the next five to seven years. Therefore, preference will be given to technologies that are in stage 3 or 4 of the Stage-Gate process. The Stage-Gate process comprises five stages:
- Stage 1: Preliminary Investigation and Analysis
- Stage 2: Concept Definition
- Stage 3: Concept Development
- Stage 4: Technology Development and Verification
- Stage 5: Information Dissemination and Commercialization.
All types of entities are eligible to apply, except Federal agencies, Federally Funded Research and Development Center Contractors, and nonprofit organizations described in section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 that engaged in lobbying activities after December 31, 1995. The prime applicant is required to include at least one U.S. manufacturer as a partner in the application team. The application may include other companies, universities, national laboratories, independent research organizations, supplier industries (equipment and materials), and industry-related technical or trade associations. Partners will contribute to the cost share (cash or in- kind) or performance of defined tasks or sub-tasks of the proposed project.
