Regulations, Guidelines and Codes and Standards

Many regulations, guidelines, and codes and standards have already been established through years of hydrogen use in industrial and aerospace applications. In addition, the systems and organizations needed to establish the new codes and standards that will be needed to facilitate the commercialization of hydrogen and fuel cells are already in place.

Because hydrogen and fuel cell systems are complex and will be used in a wide range of applications, many standards development organizations are cooperating to develop the codes and standards needed to prepare for the commercialization of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. A National Codes and Standards Template (PDF 64 KB) has been developed to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the codes and standards organizations involved. Download Adobe Reader.

The Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Codes and Standards Matrix is an up-to-date directory of all codes and standards worldwide dealing with hydrogen, fuel cells, and fuel cell related issues.

To help regulators sort through these codes and standards, DOE sponsored the development of a Regulators Guide to Permitting Hydrogen Technologies. It provides basic information about information on the regulatory process and relevant codes and standards for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
