Professor Petros Sofronis to Head International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research

Petros Sofronis, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been chosen to lead the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research of Kyushu University. Dr. Sofronis has been conducting hydrogen embrittlement research and development at the University of Illinois funded by EERE’s Fuel Cell Technologies Program. On December 9, Kyushu University of Japan was celebrated as the only winning organization in the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) Program

Sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, the program provides support for research and development (R&D) projects and encourages international collaboration among leading researchers.  The program is meant to encourage the development of highly prominent R&D centers to attract leading scientists from around the world to conduct high-caliber work. Funding of approximately $10M over five years will be provided to the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.
