H-Prize Competition Topic Feedback Requested

March 20, 2012

Note: The RFI response deadline has been extended to May 31, 2012.

The Fuel Cell Technologies Program seeks feedback from interested parties on H-Prize Competition topics that will incentivize innovative advances in the field of hydrogen energy. Areas of interest for topics include hydrogen production, distribution, and utilization.

The H-Prize was established by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, and authorized the Department of Energy to competitively award prizes for advances in hydrogen energy technologies. The purpose of the H-Prize is to accelerate the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies by offering prizes to motivate and reward outstanding scientific and engineering advancements. The Department of Energy previously conducted an H-Prize competition for hydrogen storage materials, and solicits information for potential additional topics.

The mobilization of private funding, in concert with a core of federal and other public funding, is at the heart of the H-Prize concept. This broadens the base of investment in incentivizing notable scientific and engineering breakthroughs, while elevating their significance with the public, and builds on DOE’s steady achievements in research, development, and demonstration.

This RFI solicits ideas for potential H-Prize topics that have the ability to capture the interest of a broad range of audiences to raise the visibility of the prize and of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies among stakeholders and the public, as well as attract the interest of the investment community. Responses collected during this process will be evaluated and a final challenge will be chosen. This RFI is not an H-Prize competition announcement.

For details see the RFI announcement for DE-FOA0000680 or email questions concerning the RFI to hprize@go.doe.gov with “Question” in the subject line. RFI responses must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, May 31, 2012.
