Request for Information (RFI) about Hydrogen Storage for Material Handling and Portable Power Applications

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Fuel Cell Technologies Program has issued an RFI seeking feedback from stakeholders regarding the proposed performance, durability, and cost targets for hydrogen storage sub-systems designed for material handling and portable power fuel cell applications. DOE is asking for industry information about the relevance and appropriateness of the suggested target values including recommendations and justification for any targets that are not currently addressed.

Material handling equipment (e.g., lift trucks, ground support equipment, baggage tractors) and portable power applications (e.g., battery chargers, consumer electronics) are providing an early market entry point for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. In support of these early market fuel cell applications, the DOE is developing storage technologies that can provide hydrogen to enable cost-effective operation in a safe and convenient package. DOE is currently working to identify appropriate technical and cost targets for these hydrogen storage sub-systems to drive improvements in storage materials, system engineering, and design.
