IEA HIA Honors U.S. Researcher at International Conference on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells

    The International Energy Agency Hydrogen Implementation Agreement (IEA HIA) awarded their Individual Prize to Dr. James M. Ohi on May 18, 2011, at the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Conference in Vancouver, Canada. Originated in 2008, the Individual Prize is awarded for research and development characterized by technical excellence and harmony in international cooperation that contributes to the understanding and advancement of basic and applied hydrogen science.

    James M. Ohi is a Consultant to the U.S. Department of Energy in Hydrogen Safety, Codes and Standards. He was formerly a Senior Project Leader in Hydrogen Technologies and Systems at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) where he implemented a component testing program to establish test methodologies and critical safety data needed for the development of technically sound equipment standards. Dr. Ohi served as the lead Safety, Codes and Standards resource for NREL to promote commercialization of fuel cell vehicles and the safe use and deployment of hydrogen technologies. In this capacity, his vision and leadership led to the coordinated efforts of safety and standards development organizations in the United States and internationally. His work led to the design of a National Template, a working structure that allows for coordinated development of hydrogen specific codes and standards delineated by expertise and interest.

    Presenting the award were Nick Beck, S&T Director-Hydrogen and Fuel Cells and Transportation, Natural Resources Canada and Mary-Rose de Valladares, IEA HIA Secretariat Manager.

    The IEA HIA was established to pursue collaborative hydrogen research and development and information exchange in renewable hydrogen production technologies, hydrogen storage, integration with renewables, hydrogen safety, system integration, and global systems analysis. The IEA HIA currently has 21 member countries plus the European Commission and UNIDO-ICHET.
