SBIR/STTR Phase I Release 2 Award Winners Announced, Includes Hydrogen Dispenser and Hydrogen Sensor Projects
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced the FY 2013 Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Phase I Release 2 award winners, including two hydrogen projects: Applied Nanotech, Inc., of Austin, Texas, and Nanosonic, Inc., of Pembroke, Virginia. These awards under the Fuel Cell Technologies Office will help small businesses with promising ideas for clean energy solutions such as hydrogen and fuel cells that could improve manufacturing processes, reduce reliance on foreign oil, and generate electricity from renewable sources.
Kyushu University Wins 2013 Hydrogen Student Design Contest
Kyushu University of Fukuoka, Japan has won the Hydrogen Education Foundation's 2013 Hydrogen Student Design Contest. This year, teams were challenged to develop hydrogen fueling infrastructure plans for the Northeast and mid-Atlantic for the 2013-2025 timeframe. The design from Kyushu University proposes infrastructure development in key urban areas using modular and portable stations, allowing the build-out of stations and adding sites with growing demand.

Energy Department Announces $9 Million to Advance Cost-Effective Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies
In support of the Obama Administration's all-of-the-above energy strategy, the Energy Department announced up to $9 million in new funding to accelerate the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies for use in vehicles, backup power systems, and hydrogen refueling components. These investments will strengthen U.S. leadership in cost-effective hydrogen and fuel cell technologies and help industry bring these technologies into the marketplace at lower cost. The Energy Department will make available up to $9 million for up to eight projects from industry, academia, and national labs.
More information, application requirements, and instructions can be found on the EERE Funding Opportunity Exchange website. The application deadline for the "Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Medium Duty Trucks, Roof-top Backup Power, and Advanced Hydrogen Refueling Components" funding opportunity has been extended to 5:00 p.m. EDT on July 25, 2013. Letters of intent are due on July 12, 2013.
EERE Announces Notice of Intent to Issue Research and Development for Hydrogen Storage FOA
The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) intends to issue, on behalf of its Fuel Cell Technologies Office, a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) entitled "Research and Development for Hydrogen Storage." EERE plans to issue the FOA in early July 2013. If applicants wish to receive official notifications and information from EERE regarding this FOA they should register in EERE Exchange. The presentation and a Q&A document from the May 13 pre-solicitation meeting are also available.

Webinar June 25: Hydrogen Storage Materials Requirements
The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy presented a live webcast on Tuesday, June 25, called Hydrogen Storage Materials Requirements. DOE's Hydrogen Storage Engineering Center of Excellence has been modeling and developing onboard hydrogen storage systems and components utilizing materials based storage media to meet the Energy Department's technical targets for storage systems. This webinar addressed the key materials requirements needed for both adsorbents and chemical hydrogen carriers to meet the 2017 DOE technical targets. Slides and a recording of the webinar will be available in early July.
Upcoming Webinar July 9: Hydrogen Production Analysis Using the H2A v3 model
EERE has developed a series of publicly-available techno-economic modeling tools for evaluating the environmental impacts and costs of hydrogen delivered to fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). This webinar will address one of these models in detail, the H2A (Hydrogen Analysis) model. H2A allows a user to estimate the cost of producing hydrogen from a variety of different technical pathways and feedstock resources and can be used to compare the relative advantages of various production technologies for cost-effective and environmentally friendly hydrogen production. In addition, H2A analysis of individual pathways can identify primary cost drivers, the projected high cost of hydrogen based on the current technology status, and the key remaining research and development challenges to meeting cost and performance goals for hydrogen production. The webinar will include information on the H2A model concept and structure, types of input data required, and methods for running the model. Results of analysis, which include the levelized cost of hydrogen, identification of the major cost contributors, and sensitivity analysis will also be featured. An example case study of hydrogen production from electrolysis of water will be presented to illustrate the H2A process. Register for this webinar now.
Upcoming Webinar July 24: DOE Analysis Related to H2USA
EERE staff and FCT-funded researchers will provide an informational briefing on models, tools, and various analyses relevant to H2USA. A new public private partnership, H2USA is focused on advancing hydrogen infrastructure to support more transportation energy options for U.S. consumers, including fuel cell electric vehicles. The new partnership brings together automakers, government agencies, gas suppliers, and the hydrogen and fuel cell industries to coordinate research and identify cost-effective solutions to deploy infrastructure that can deliver affordable, clean hydrogen fuel in the United States. EERE Releases Well-to-Wheels and Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Light-Duty Vehicles
EERE recently released peer-reviewed documentation detailing the updated well-to-wheels greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and petroleum energy usage as well as the life cycle cost analysis for advanced technology vehicles that could be deployed in approximately 2035.
EERE Releases Current Status of High-Accuracy Hydrogen Meters
A new EERE report summarizes the current status of meters for hydrogen fueling with information collected from publically available documents and a Request for Information, excluding any proprietary/company sensitive information. While there are technical challenges to developing meters that meet the requirements, non-technical issues such as lack of demand and testing facilities are also barriers to development.

NREL: NREL Drives Toward the Future with Fuel Cell EVs
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has received four Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles—Advanced (FCHV-adv) on loan from Toyota. These vehicles will help NREL enhance its research capabilities related to hydrogen fueling infrastructure, renewable hydrogen production, and vehicle performance.
