International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy

The United States is a founding member of the International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy (IPHE), which was created in 2003 to foster international cooperation on hydrogen and fuel cell R&D, common codes and standards, and information sharing on infrastructure development. The IPHE's 17 partners organize, evaluate, and coordinate multinational research, development, and deployment programs that will advance the introduction of fuel cells and hydrogen infrastructure at a global scale. The U.S. served as chair of the steering committee from 2003 through 2007 and is continuing its active participation as a vice-chair of the steering committee. U.S. representatives also lead several work groups of the IPHE Implementation - Liaison Committee.

Since it was formed, IPHE has succeeded in establishing an effective operational structure to facilitate international collaboration and networking both among researchers and at the highest levels of government. With IPHE's help, nearly all partner countries have either completed or initiated roadmaps or national strategies for hydrogen and fuel cell R&D. In addition, IPHE has leveraged resources by endorsing 30 international collaborative projects, co-labeled over 13 workshops and conferences, and sponsored a series of workshops on topics ranging from hydrogen storage to infrastructure issues. Joint Statements

In addition to preparing for the IPHE, the U.S. is working bi-laterally with countries to develop cooperative plans for research and development of technologies to advance the development of the hydrogen economy. To this end, the U.S. has signed several Joint Statements.
