SBIR/STTR Phase I Release 2 Award Winners Announced, Includes Hydrogen Dispenser and Hydrogen Sensor Projects

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced the FY 2013 Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Phase I Release 2 award winners, including two hydrogen projects located in Texas and Virginia. These awards under the Fuel Cell Technologies Office will help small businesses with promising ideas for clean energy solutions such as hydrogen and fuel cells that could improve manufacturing processes, reduce reliance on foreign oil, and generate electricity from renewable sources.
Applied Nanotech, Inc. of Austin, Texas will develop a low-cost hydrogen sensor with a longer life time and the ability to detect hydrogen in lower concentrations than other types of sensors. If successful, this sensor will lower the cost of hydrogen leak detection systems while maintaining high reliability and can be used in a wide range of applications, from hydrogen production facilities to fueling stations.
Nanosonic, Inc. of Pembroke, Virginia will develop a hydrogen dispenser hose that uses their innovative patented material. The proposed design will result in a high-strength, light-weight hose with ultra-low hydrogen permeability and embrittlement resistance for 700 bar refueling.
Funded by DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy through DOE's SBIR/STTR programs, these selections are for Phase I work. Awards are for feasibility of innovative concepts which could be developed into prototype technologies during a phase II project.
