The Department of Energy seeks to develop a durable, direct hydrogen fuel cell power system that reaches a peak efficiency of 60% and has a power density of 650 W/L, a specific power of 650 W/kg, and a cost of $45/kW by 2010 ($30/kW by 2015). The research and development sought through this funding announcement will be focused on advancing fuel cell technology toward the 2010 technical performance and cost targets developed through the FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership and detailed in the DOE Hydrogen, Fuel Cells, and Infrastructure Technologies Program Multi-Year RD&D Plan. The technologies must be scalable to be suitable across the spectrum of vehicle platforms.
Proposals are sought in the following topic areas:
- Topic 1: Improved Fuel Cell Membranes
- Topic 2: Water Transport within the Stack
- Topic 3: Advanced Cathode Catalysts and Supports
- Topic 4: Cell Hardware
- Topic 5: Innovative Fuel Cell Concepts
- Topic 6: Effects of Impurities on Fuel Cell Performance and Durability
- Topic 7: Stationary Fuel Cell Demonstration
This funding opportunity announcement is open to nonprofit and for-profit private entities, institutions of higher education, and state and local governments. Cost-sharing of 20% for research and development and 50% for demonstration will be required.
