Status of Hydrogen Storage Technologies

The current status in terms of weight, volume, and cost of various hydrogen storage technologies is shown below. These values are estimates from storage system developers and the R&D community and will be continuously updated by DOE as new technological advancements take place.

This figure shows the current status of several hydrogen storage systems in terms of weight and volume. It illustrates the volumetric and gravimetric hydrogen storage system capacities for DOE's 2015 target (9 wt%, 45 g/L), DOE's revised system targets (6.5 wt%, 50 g/L), DOE's ultimate target (7.5 wt%, 65 g/L), as well as estimates for different technologies: complex hydride (four points between 1.5 wt%, 18 g/L and 2.5 wt%, 25 g/L), c-sorbent (3 wt%, 15 g/L), chemical hydride (two points between 2.8 wt%, 23 g/L and 3.5 wt%, 28 g/L), 350 bar compressed hydrogen "learning demos" (between 2.8 wt%, 18 g/L and 4 wt%, 18 g/L), 700 bar compressed hydrogen "learning demos" (between 2.5 wt%, 20 g/L and 4.5 wt%, 20 g/L), cryocompressed (two points between 5.2 wt%, 25 g/L and 6 wt%, 37 g/L), and liquid hydrogen (two points between 4.9 wt%, 35 g/L and 6.7 wt%, 33 g/L).
