FY 1999 Budget in Brief
The following summarizes the FY1999 Industrial Technologies budget.
Fiscal Year 1999 Highlights
In fiscal year 1999, the Office of Industrial Technologies will initiate the development of a technology road map with the mining industry, as a corollary to its work with the steel and aluminum industries. OIT will also significantly expand its research in bio-based renewable feedstocks to support an agriculture industry vision. In addition, OIT will initiate efforts to increase the efficiency of steam and compressed air systems in industry, modeled after its successful Motor Challenge program.
OIT's fiscal year 1999 funding will support the development of technologies that reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, while providing cost savings for industry. A competitive solicitation will be conducted and be open to all industries, with emphasis on those industries that have developed industry-wide visions and associated road maps. OIT will select proposals that offer the greatest impact on greenhouse gases and have widespread applicability to industry.
OIT is concluding its current work with the petroleum refining industry due to the industry's lack of progress in developing a vision and technology road map to direct future work. OIT is also terminating its Climate Wise program which received no appropriations in FY 1998 and is not included in the FY 1999 request.
