Industrial Technologies Program Activities in South Dakota

General Information

South Dakota has a total of 0.8 million residents and ranks 48th in the nation in terms of GDP, which is $33.9 billion. In 2006, South Dakota ranked 47th in the nation's industrial energy consumption at 65.3 trillion Btu and 45th in the nation's industrial natural gas consumption at 11.0 trillion Btu. The top industries in the state are listed in the table below. South Dakota's leading industries include food, machinery, and computer and electronic product manufacturing. Together, these three industries are responsible for 15,941 jobs, $584.7 million in payroll, and $5,422.6 million in shipments.

The Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) is working with one partner in the state on cost-shared research and development projects and on near-term industrial savings through the Save Energy Now initiative.

Energy Savings Assessments

With emphasis on reducing natural gas consumption, DOE provides American businesses, factories, and manufacturing facilities with on-site Energy Savings Assessments (ESAs). The purpose of these assessments is to identify immediate opportunities to save energy and money that will lead to significant long-term savings. Gold and silver stars represent facilities that have been recognized for their achievements in industrial energy savings.
